From 1 November 2025, the Australian Business Register (ABR) ceased publishing trading names, and we will update our public register to align with this change. This means that only legal entity names and business names registered with the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) will be published on our Register. If you currently have a trading name listed that is not registered with ASIC, it will be removed from your record on the TPB Register.
If you are a tax practitioner what you need to do
- Review your Register entry and check whether your business or trading name is registered with ASIC.
- If you wish to continue displaying a business name on our Register, ensure it is registered with ASIC. You can do this by visiting the ASIC website and completing the registration process.
- If you need to update your details, use our online form, ‘Update legal or business name’ from within My Profile and provide evidence of your business name’s registration with ASIC.
You have until 1 March 2026 to make changes.
These changes are designed to maintain consistency across government registers and help consumers accurately identify registered tax practitioners. If you do not update any unregistered business name, only your legal entity name will appear on our Register.
To support this change, we will also enhance the search functionality for our Register, making it easier for clients to find you by your registered business name. Make sure your details are up to date to avoid confusion and ensure compliance with the new requirements.
