Annual report 2016–17
Message from the Chair
I am pleased to present the Tax Practitioners Board Annual Report 2016–17, as tabled in Parliament on 27 October 2017.
During this year we assisted a larger population of tax practitioners to comply with the Tax Agent Services Act 2009, promoting high professional and ethical standards that protect consumers of tax agent services.
At 30 June 2017, 78,593 tax practitioners were registered with the Tax Practitioners Board (TPB) including 41,532 tax agents, 15,235 BAS agents and 21,826 tax (financial) advisers. This population is now more than three times the number registered when the TPB first commenced in 2010.
Throughout the year we focused on readiness for the registration renewal process for tax (financial) advisers which commenced on 1 July 2017.
We also worked to increase community awareness of the need to ensure that anyone providing tax advice for a fee is registered with the TPB.
This year’s report captures our work to support all registered tax practitioners and those seeking registration with the TPB.
