Processing times

With the closing of certain transitional application options toward the end of 2010, the TPB received a high number of applications. A large number of applications for registration renewal have also been submitted.

Our staff continue to work hard to process new applications and renewals as quickly as possible.

If you have not yet been contacted about your renewal or new application, please do not be concerned. We will contact you to request further information or clarification if it is required. When the TPB has made a decision we will notify you in writing of the decision on your registration with us.

Agents who have submitted renewal applications please note:
If you submitted a renewal application you remain registered until the TPB has made a decision, and notified you of the outcome in writing.

Processing applications

As an individual’s circumstances are unique and require individual consideration, processing times vary from one application to another. The time taken for your new application or renewal to be processed and considered by the TPB will vary and can range from a few weeks to a number of months. The main factor which causes delay is that some applicants do not provide all the information for which we ask.

The TPB is looking at setting registration benchmarks for our business as usual environment. We are aiming to achieve a one month turnaround for processing registration applications and renewals, provided that all necessary information for the TPB to consider and approve an application is submitted in the first instance.

Ensuring you provide all the correct information

If you have provided all necessary information and evidence with your renewal or application then you will not be contacted prior to the TPB considering your application. When the TPB has decided your application, we will notify you in writing of the outcome.

Many applications are submitted in an incomplete state which can cause delays in processing. TPB staff must follow-up missing details with applicants, which may delay processing your application. Some of the most common issues we encounter with applications include:

  • incomplete qualification records – many applications are submitted without attaching adequate transcripts of all relevant academic awards; and
  • insufficient evidence of relevant experience.

Remember: If you lodged an application to renew your registration you are still considered registered until the TPB makes a decision on your renewal, and has notified you in writing of the outcome.

The TPB would like to thank you for your patience, particularly if you are still waiting to hear the outcome of your application or renewal.

How applications are processed

When we receive your application we conduct a review to ensure that:

  • all parts of the application have been fully completed, and
  • any supporting documentation provided is appropriate.

Once we have completed this initial check we then conduct a preliminary assessment of the suitability of your application for registration.

If information is incomplete, or we require additional information to support your application for registration, we will contact you to ask for further details.
Incomplete or incorrect applications will take us longer to process.

Once we have sufficient information to support your registration, it will go through a formal Board assessment process, including but not limited to, considering your fitness and propriety to be registered. You will then be notified of the outcome.

ATO Portal access

New registrants will require a registration number (RAN) issued by the TPB before the Australian Tax Office (ATO) can provide portal access. This includes access to:

  • the Tax Agent Portal,
  • the BAS Agent Portal,
  • the Electronic commerce interface (ECI), and
  • Electronic Lodgement Service (ELS).

The ATO grants portal access and cannot do so until the Board has granted the registration and issued a registration number.

When registration is granted, the Board issues tax agents with a ‘registered agent number’ (RAN). You will also be issued with your unique Security Code which can be used to change your contact details with the TPB.
